II. OBJECTIVES :

The engineers at IBM when they first envisioned the desktop computer, wanted to be able to have future expansion capability built into the computer they were designing. This expansion was accomplished both internally and externally. Originally the number of expansion slots on the motherboard limited the number of devices you could have on your computer. But with the development of many, many externally connected devices, the capabilities of a simple computer system have been greatly enhanced. Of course there are limitations.
