Week 09

I. PRELIMINARY INFORMATION:

A. CLASS: PC Technology

B. TITLE OF UNIT: A+

C. TITLE OF LESSON: Mentoring/Hard Drives (con't)

D. COMPETENCIES ADDRESSED: None

E. DATE & TIME:

F. WEEK OF INSTRUCTION: 9

G. INSTRUCTOR: R Dorsey

II. OBJECTIVES :

Students will learn this step in building a computer by manipulating the geometry of hard disk drives and CD units to ensure smooth operation of the system and application software. Students will demonstrate proper maintenance actions to ensure optimal operation of all disk drives. Students will install HDD drives and install an operating system. Passing this task will be dependent upon the system booting to the desktop.

Students need to recognize the performance parameters of a floppy, an HDD and CD/DVD disk drive and how it can degrade the performance of a computer.

Students must learn to exhibit the skills necessary to first organize and setup a disk drive system and then be able to maintain and repair that system should problems arise.

V. INTRODUCTION:

This week continues with the disk drives and focuses on safety, maintenance, and optimizing the units.

VI. CONTENT :

A list of the possible tasks/competencies of this class up to this point is to be checked off by the Second Year students after observation of the First Year Students. This is to enable some leadership skills in the second year students and to ensure that the first year students have mastered all the skills required to this point.

By doing the checklist (which is heavily laden with disk drive objectives), the first year students will get an in-depth understanding of what it is they need to have knowledge of at this point in the lesson plan.

The reading assignment for this week is chapters 7and 8 with a test for each chapter on Friday. These chapters cover both floppy and hard drives.

LAB - At this time, let’s install and test the drives we have in the lab area. Very few of these drives work well so we will optimize them after installation. Do lab installs and begin troubleshooting.

VII. SUMMARY:

We have learned how to make ourselves more valuable to the organization by being able to safely care for the company’s assets. Proper maintenance helps everyone, the company, the department head, and you by saving money, protecting company assets, and protecting company data.

This lesson is part of an ongoing process of internal component maintenance and repair for the basic PC. This part presents the information about the CD and DVD Disk drives. The next lesson follows on with external components and their maintenance and repair.

VIII. ASSIGNMENTS :

IX. LESSON/COURSE EVALUATION:

Chapter Test 8 and Lab sheet completion.
